The next elected council at Corner Brook city hall will be getting a pay raise. At Monday night’s public meeting, council voted on a recommendation to increase salaries for councillors, the deputy mayor and mayor by more than 20 percent. At the Public Council Meeting of August 19th, a Notice of Motion was presented to amend the Council Remuneration and Reimbursement Regulations. Councillor Pamela Gill says she is shocked they didn’t receive any feedback and suggested the city invest in radio advertising in the future to get the message out. Meanwhile, Councillor Bill Griffin says it can be stressful to be on council and the salary will help attract candidates. Deputy Mayor Linda Chaisson says this is not a wise use of taxpayer’s money and voted against it. Mayor Jim Parsons has worked full time for the past seven years in his role. He says after reviewing the rates and the study, he feels a third party study could have been done by staff. Council salary increases will cost the city an extra $51,137 each year.
