Corner Brook’s annual Jigs and Wheels Festival will contain two nights of music, instead of one, and it’s moving back to Broadway. On Bayfm with Lenny Benoit, this week, deputy Mayor Pam Keeping and Mayor Linda Chaisson spoke briefly about this ten-day event which kicks into gear in July with a street celebration of outdoor music and activities on a Friday and Saturday.
Meanwhile, at this week’s public meeting, council discussed a proposed change to noise regulations for the Broadway Street party to allow music from 5 p.m. on Friday to 1 a.m. on Sunday. Councillor Sherry Dean had concerns about music going until the early morning. City Manager Darren Charters says they have had a few noise complaints in the past. Dean believes people in the area should be asked how they feel about it. In the end, council voted on amending the motion for the music to end at midnight, but the vote was tied meaning it will be brought back for discussion at the next regular meeting.
Meanwhile, a theme of the festival includes a focus on the all-terrain vehicle access offered by the City. At Monday’s meeting, council approved a recommendation that all streets be opened to atv’s, but due to high traffic volume, these machines are not allowed on the Lewin Parkway and on O’Connell Drive from Bliss Street to Mt. Bernard Avenue. The city’s Director of Protective services, Todd Flynn, says there haven’t been any accidents or incidents, and this is a success story.
The Jigs and Wheels festival will take place July 24th – August 2nd.
