BOISAR’s Stephen Decker says those heading into the wilderness need to think about trip planning, taking the essentials and having the necessary training.
The Bay of Islands Volunteer Search and Rescue team is reminding people of the three T’s of backcountry safety. It was a week ago today, members deployed on a search for an overdue hunter in the Hughes Brook area and within hours, the man was safely located. BOISAR’s Stephen Decker says those heading into the wilderness need to think about trip planning, taking the essentials and having the necessary training. He says leaving details of where you will be heading could be the best way to protect your safety. Decker says if you do become stranded, lost or injured while in the woods, stay put and wait for someone to come, and never try to “self-rescue.”
