Host Sarah Parsons says 4500 people die every year by suicide in Canada.

On this week’s edition of the Plain Truth, host Sarah Parsons explored the topic of Mental Health, which also fell on Bell’s Let’s Talk Day, an annual event which focuses on mental health in Canada. Parsons says suicide affects thousands of people and 4500 die every year by suicide in Canada.

Crystal Green is a social worker, councillor, and a trainer for the ASIST, or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training program. She says these numbers are underreported mainly because of the stigma and actual numbers are about five times higher. Since 1983, over two million people have been trained through ASIST in over 30 countries worldwide. Green says it provides a safe place for people to talk with someone. She says there are many resources available online and in this region, like the Bridge the Gapp website and Doorways here in Corner Brook and Deer Lake, which offer walk-in or one-on -one counselling.
