An increase in whooping cough in NL with 230 confirmed cases

    Symptoms may start with a runny nose, mild fever and cough, and progress to episodes of severe, prolonged coughing, often accompanied by a distinctive “whooping” sound during inhalation.

    The Department of Health and Community Services is monitoring an increase in whooping cough or pertussis. To date, in 2024, there have been 230 confirmed cases in NL. Pertussis is a contagious respiratory infection that can lead to severe complications, especially in vulnerable populations. Symptoms may start with a runny nose, mild fever and cough, and progress to episodes of severe, prolonged coughing, often accompanied by a distinctive “whooping” sound during inhalation. Symptoms can last from weeks to months. Infants are at the highest risk of complications, such as pneumonia and seizures.
