Corner Brook MHA Gerry Byrne says it’s been about 15 years since there was a cardiologist working in the western region. He says government has been successful in recruiting a cardiologist to work from the new Western Memorial Regional Hospital. Byrne says Dr. Michael O’Reilly who is one of the best cardiologists in North America, and is a native son of Corner Brook and this will cut down on wait times and long term hospital stays. Byrne says the doctor is impressed with the equipment that is in place at the new hospital, saying he wishes he would have had that equipment where he is currently practicing. Meanwhile, the new hospital has a new cancer care unit but no oncologist to work there. Byrne says once the hospital opens this weekend, the process of recruiting a cancer specialist should get easier. The new Western Memorial Regional Hospital is set to open to patients this Sunday, June 2nd.
