Unlike doctors and nurse practitioners, whose services are covered by MCP, some similar services offered by pharmacists will cost many people out of pocket. Janice Audeau is a Pharmacist with family Pharmachoice in Corner Brook. On bayfm’s “Ask the Pharmacist,” she talked about how things like vaccines are covered at a pharmacy while issues like eczema for example are not. Audeau says in a situation where we have excessive wait times in emergency rooms that could be resolved in a community pharmacy, it’s something to think about.
She says in Nova Scotia, if you are a diabetic, have COPD, mental health concerns, high blood pressure and more, you can go to a pharmacist and have a care plan developed which includes follow up.
Audeau says some private health insurances offer a wellness account which covers pharmacists for some of these services. She says those who have a NL Drug card, can qualify for a review every year if prescribed 3 or more medications for chronic illnesses.
