The AG delivered a report on personal care homes last year, which was requested in 2023 by the Public Accounts Committee. The long term care audit is the second part of that request, which came in part due to outstanding recommendations from a 2016 audit. Committee Chair Sarah Stoodley says they’ll be sending an urgent letter to NL Health Services requesting an action plan and a hearing.. She says the report is hopeful and sheds a lot of light on long term care and gives a great opportunity for everyone to get their ducks in a row.
Stoodley says the report contains some key issues that the public would expect to be done today. She says for example, up to date criminal record checks, vulnerable sector checks, and making sure medicine cabinets are locked. Stoodley says she’s hopeful many of the AG’s recommendations will be in place by the time a public hearing is held.
The total budget for LTC this year is $482M.
