Vaccines are due to be available this week through doctors or pharmacists and can be booked online at the “Time for the shot” website. Influenza got an early start here with at least 16 cases confirmed as of last week. On Bayfm’s “Ask the Pharmacist” Janice Audeau of Family Pharmachoice said they offer vaccine clinics twice a week and any vaccine takes about two weeks to become fully effective.
Audeau says there is no vaccine against the common cold and over the medications for this don’t make it go away faster. She says the virus will run its course but the best thing is drinking lots of water and getting plenty of rest.
Health Canada has a warning on cough and cold medications to not give them to children under the age of 6 but Audeau says there are things that can help like a Neti pot.
While you can still get infected, vaccines help the body fight the viruses off and prevent more serious complications.
