Some Ukrainians may want to go home and it's a fair choice, says Immigration Minister Gerry Byrne

    Byrne says 91 percent of the Ukrainians have chosen to make this province a permanent residence.

    Immigration, Population, Skills and Growth Minister Gerry Byrne says there are 3300 Ukrainians living here. He says since circumstances have changed in Ukraine and it is becoming safer, he understands that some will want to go home. Byrne spoke with Marina, a Ukrainian, was left in a difficult situation where she had to find new housing. This after the house she was renting in was bought and the new owners wanted to renovate. Byrne offered her options for rentals nearby and she told him, Thank You, but she wanted to go back to the Ukraine to be with her father. He says Newfoundlanders understand the desire to be home and it’s a fair choice for them to make. He says 91 percent of the Ukrainians have chosen to make this province a permanent residence.
