SIRT-NL made an announcement on Wednesday.
The province’s police watchdog has determined the RCMP did not contribute to a fatal vehicle crash in Halfway Point. A 38-year-old woman died, and a 39-year-old man was charged with dangerous driving causing death following the crash that happened early on the morning of Friday, March 31.
NL Serious Incident Response Team Director Michael King says after reviewing the incident, they have determined that it does not fall within SIRT-NL’s mandate.
According to police, an officer saw a vehicle approaching head-on in the opposite lane. The officer swerved to avoid being hit, and then tried to pull the vehicle over. The vehicle sped away and the officer did not pursue due to public safety concerns. Minutes later, a 911 call came in about the crash on the Main Road.
SIRT-NL is a civilian-led oversight agency which conducts investigations into incidents involving serious injury, death, sexual assault, domestic violence or any other matter of significant public interest arising from the actions of a police officer in Newfoundland and Labrador.
