Able bodied fisherman, farmers, miners and adolescents started to work on the church in 1914.
Our Lady of Mercy Heritage Church on the Port au Port Peninsula is turning 100 next year and she is getting a major face lift. $225,000 in funding has been announced for exterior repairs, door installation and paint. The bulk of the funding over $145,000 is from ACOA. Industry Minister Andrew Parsons announced nearly $51,000 and the church has been a hub of the community for a very long time. Able bodied fisherman, farmers, miners and adolescents started to work on the church in 1914. It took 11 years to complete and was consecrated in 1925. In later years in 1997, the church was named a Registered Heritage Structure by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. At 115 feet in height, Our Lady of Mercy Church can seat up to 1,000 people.
