Bay of Islands Radio is the first to announce Mi’kmaq artist Marcus Gosse has created an indigenous coin with the Canadian Mint. The coins are nearly pure silver and 5500 of them will be available in August at various locations, including Canada Post. Gosse has been painting for nearly a quarter of a century and says he was so pleased when they asked him to do it. Gosse finished working on the project a couple of weeks ago. He says a really neat feature about the coin, is that it is three dimensional, like it is carved in levels and you can see the mountains. Gosse has some big mural projects on the go as well as various painting commissions. He says he wanted the coin to show the stages of the Mi’kmaq creation story, which is told in seven levels. One of Marcus Gosse’s latest creations, called Whale Family, sits proudly on display on an SUV at the Mini Cooper dealership in St. John’s.
