Kruger is opening a Project Tuckamore Community Engagement office today to talk about plans to modernize and diversify Corner Brook Pulp and Paper. At a sold out luncheon yesterday, VP Special Projects Darren Pelley spoke about four areas of investment which combine the forestry, the mill site, construction of a wind farm and technology improvements at Deer Lake Power.
Under the project, there will be one paper machine at the mill making newsprint from the biomass created from sawmills, and a wind farm will be built about 23kms in back of Massey Drive. Pelley says they’ll be applying under the environmental assessment process for this during the next couple of weeks. He says the wind farm will power the mill and supply the forest sector with 17-22 towers.
There will be about 575 jobs as a result of construction and Pelley says this is a $700M Kruger investment that makes them viable and will include the repayment of the loan to the provincial government. He says without the wind farm approval, there is no other plan and this project is their path forward to being viable.
The Project Tuckamore Community Office is located in the CRI building across from the mill. It’s open to the general public from 10 a.m., until 2 p.m. Monday thru Friday.
