Hello Humpback puts Newfoundland and Labrador at the forefront of whale watching in the world, blending excitement and learning with technology, innovation and sustainability.

Last week, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation launched a first-of-its-kind website called Hello Humpback. Whale tails are like human fingerprints – each is unique and can be used as identification.  Photos can be uploaded to the Hello Humpback website and, from there, image recognition software analyzes the photo and searches for a match. The database is powered by Happywhale, an organization committed to caring for marine environments through conservation and education. Users can then gain an understanding of their whale’s movement around the world. Hello Humpback puts Newfoundland and Labrador at the forefront of whale watching in the world, blending excitement and learning with technology, innovation and sustainability. With tens of thousands of whales visiting the province’s shores each year, every whale encounter now comes with a deeper meaning and a story to tell.
