Government wants higher fines to protect wildlife in this province. Legislation has been introduced to amend the Wild Life Act. Currently, resisting, obstructing or impersonating a wildlife officer can result in a fine up to $500 or up to six months in prison. Fines for that could go as high as $25,000. A first time conviction for big-game penalties has a fine between one and five thousand dollars which would increase to between two and twenty five thousand. For a second conviction, fines between three and ten thousand dollars would range between six and twenty five thousand. As well, anyone convicted of an offence would not get any type of hunting licence for five years, not just for moose or caribou.
