On Thursday last week, government issued a news release with an update on the Provincial Court Working Group. The group found that delays in Provincial Courts are the result of “pressures that have built over time, including an increase in complex cases requiring more court time and resources, increased workload without a corresponding increase in resources, and persistent staffing shortages and vacancies.”
Identified improvements include the recruitment and retention of sheriff’s officers and court officers, potential infrastructure changes, advanced use of technology and better access to justice. This work will need more money from the upcoming budget and possible legislative changes.
