Fisheries Minister Gerry Byrne has announced funding to support the establishment of a sustainable redfish fishery. An investment of $47,000 to the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union from the Fisheries Research Grant Program will support experimental fishing work of Unit 1 redfish in Western Newfoundland. The funding will aid in the development of a redfish fishery that is economically and environmentally sustainable. Byrne says “this support is an acknowledgement of the need to advance gear technology, to enable the necessary data collection that will allow us to better understand our redfish stocks and support responsible management decisions.”
