23 year old Alaura Alexander, dropped into the Bayfm studios for a chat about her artwork, something she’s been doing since she was old enough to hold a pencil.

This is World Autism Month and a number of Corner Brook residents have been recognized by the Autism Society NL in their “Autistic Creators Celebration.” A total of 32 incredible creators have been featured through the group’s online collection for their art, poetry, storytelling, music, photography, and more. One of them is 23 year old Alaura Alexander, who dropped into the Bayfm studios for a chat about her artwork, something she’s been doing since she was old enough to hold a pencil. Alexander says she’s a traditional artist, meaning she draws with pencil, inks the lines over with various pens, and then colours them accordingly. She says art is very important to her and she feels it is the most human form of expression for what you can’t put into words.

Alexander likes to draw what she has a big appreciation for, admitting it’s mostly fan art. She says a close friend told her she should submit her artwork but she didn’t think this would happen even though she feels wonderful about being featured.

Alexander is very close with her 17-year-old brother Max, who is also autistic. She says he is heavily involved in pixel art and working on a game. Alexander is beyond proud of him and loves seeing him improve.

Alexander has a message for those who know her, saying she’s not proud of who she used to be but thankful for the people in her life and art which helps her highlight the positives in life. She says she’s better now.

Other Corner Brook residents among the collection include Dylan Bennett, Sarah Flight, James Reid, and Isaac Vincent.
