At this week’s public council meeting, Councilor Vaughn Granter says this new policy will provide staff with a standard process setting speed limits on streets to ensure that appropriate speed limits are set based primarily on the classification, function, and physical characteristics of a street and that the speed limits are established in a consistent manner using an objective and technical method.
Councilor Pamela Gill asked if police were included in this or invited to provide input. The city’s Director of Engineering Donny Burden, says they were not. He says they wouldn’t be consulted during this process since the policy was created by the consultant who did the entire traffic study, , policy done by consultant who did the entire traffic study for the city. Burden says speeds won’t be going up but could be decreasing in some areas. Councilor Charles Pender says having a policy in place ensures every street is treated equally.
