The regime will regulate offshore wind development projects with revenue flowing to the province
Proposed amendments to the Atlantic Accord will now include offshore wind power. The accord is an agreement of joint management between this province, Nova Scotia, and the federal government that has been in effect since the eighties. Governments work together to develop energy resources offshore with revenue from projects flowing to the province. Natural Resources Canada says between 2010 and 2021, the amount of energy produced worldwide from offshore wind grew almost twenty fold. As the world looks for cleaner sources of power, offshore renewable energy technologies are gaining momentum, namely offshore wind. Expansion of the existing regime to include offshore wind is the key needed to get projects started. Other amendments include improving the alignment between the accord and the Impact Assessment Act, providing tools to support government’s marine conservation agenda, and modernizing the land tenure regime for offshore petroleum development. Also included is a name change to the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Energy Regulator.
