Volunteer fire departments got a boost last week with funding for essential equipment, training, and operational support. Premier Tony Wakeham was in his district Thursday and announced nearly $540,000 for a pumper truck for the Stephenville Fire Department, more than $11,000 for fire equipment for the Cape St. George Fire Department, over $9,000 for equipment for the Port au Port Regional Volunteer Fire Department; and, $15,000 for Stephenville, Kippens and Lourdes to buy 15 sets of wildland coveralls each.
Meanwhile, during the recent Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services annual convention in Gander funding for new fire trucks and equipment was announced and included Pasadena Fire Rescue, Steady Brook-Little Rapids Regional Fire Department, Bay St. George’s South Volunteer Fire Department, and the St. George’s Fire Department. $770,000 for four enclosed trailers stocked with equipment and personal protective equipment was also announced and includes one for Deer Lake Fire rescue.
