Premier Tony Wakeham took time at an announcement yesterday to talk about the opportunities that lie ahead. Trades NL represents 14 building trades unions and thousands of skilled trades workers. Yesterday, they endorsed the announcement made on August 17th about the development of Churchill Falls and Gull Island. Wakeham told reporters this deal is not about politicians it’s about the people of NL.
Wakeham says with what’s happening south of the border, and even more counter tariffs added on Monday, the federal government is committed to this project in a big way with an investment of billions of dollars.
Meanwhile, MHA’s will debate the deal on Monday but Wakeham says a referendum won’t happen.
Wakeham says the fed’s loan guarantee of $20B to develop Gull Islands wasn’t there before. Meanwhile, he says the Innu will have access to all materials. At peak construction, the Gull Island project alone is expected to employ as many as 5,000 workers,
