Since 2009, Members of the House of Assembly, or MHA’s, have been getting an annual salary of just over $95K. Now there’s a recommendation to give each of them a pay raise of more than $20K, starting next year. The Members’ Compensation Review Committee delivered a more than 160 page report to the Speaker of the House, Paul Lane, on Thursday and yesterday he made it public. Lane is also Chair of the committee and the MHA for Mount Pearl-Southlands.
NL is second to provincially elected politicians in Prince Edward, who are paid just shy of $87K a year and the highest was Ontario, where the annual salary is more than $163K. Other recommendations of the report included bumps in pay for other House of Assembly positions, including Opposition House Leader, Speaker, and more. Lane says he has to be politically neutral and he has responsibilities as Speaker, which is why he isn’t talking to other members or on how he feels about the report.
There are 40 MHA’s in this province who will be briefed by the Management Commission on October 21st. It will also be live on the House of Assembly’s website, Facebook page and Youtube.
