Xplore CEO Brent Johnston says it costs many thousands of dollars per km to deliver fibre to these communities and the support of government makes it more economically able to work.
Xplore has announced a massive build to provide fibre to the home which will mean more people living in rural areas will have better access to the internet. Premier John Hogan says they’ve been speaking about this day for the past couple of months and while there is work to be done. This is a $300 million project and the provincial government is providing $20 million which will lead to 280 communities or 25,000 people with increased connectivity.
Xplore CEO Brent Johnston says this is a very labour and capital intensive project. He says it costs many thousands of dollars per km to deliver fibre to these communities and the support of government makes it more economically able to work.
Johnston says fiber connectivity will be around for generations to come and is the most superior solution. Xplore is a Canadian company and expects the project to be completed by the end of next year or into 2027 but there will be opportunities for residents to connect throughout the build.
