A strong weather system is hitting the province and Environment Canada has issued wind and rainfall warnings, as well as special weather statements. An  intense low-pressure system is bringing heavy rainfall amounts as high as 50 milimetres and high winds gusting up to 120 km/hr. Coastal flooding, including storm surges, is likely in low-lying areas from the south coast of the island, along the northeast coast, as far north as Nain.
