Huxter and seven others will be invested in the Order of NL during a ceremony on January 27th, at Government House.
Elaine Huxter of Steady Brook will be heading to St. John’s later this month to be invested in the Order of NL. She is being recognized for her contributions as a volunteer. She was born in Ontario and spent ten years in the Canadian Forces, where she met her husband Dr. Bob Huxter. Upon retirement, they moved to Corner Brook in 1997 and he continued here as a Doctor, while she became heavily involved with the church, choirs, and school. They lost their nine year old daughter in 2000. Already heavily involved in volunteer work, Huxter became even more involved in volunteering and reaching out to other grieving parents. She had been a member of the Provincial board for Canadian Parents for French at the time of Heather’s death. That led to the creation of the Heather Huxter Story Writing contest for grades 4- 6 students.
Huxter is still very involved with the Rotary Club of Corner Brook, was president of the race team at Marble Mountain and a ski instructor, and she plays the bagpipe, having performed at each sport opening ceremony during the 1999 Canada Games, as well as many other community events. She also presents Quilts of Valour to veterans in Canada, and recently presented four to veterans at the Corner Brook Legion.
