Rural Economic Minister Gudie Hutchings believes the cod fishery has a bright future in NL. The Department of Fisheries announced a historic return of the commercial Northern Cod Fishery last month, marking an end to a 30 year moratorium. Hutchings says cod is a big part of our history and needs to be developed properly. Hutchings says “fishers have waited a long time for the return of a commercial cod fishery and processors are ready to deliver our best products.” She says the fishery is not what it used to be and needs to change with the times.

Meanwhile, the Association of Seafood Producers is working in partnership with the Atlantic Groundfish Council (AGC) focused on Northern Cod to be able to market to more countries.
