They will have moose stew with bannock, a tea station with hot chocolate, a hunting and trapping session with rabbit snare demonstrations, as well as fur and plant medicine displays.
Qalipu First Nation is putting the final touches on planning for an event at the end of the month that’s grown into a two-day community celebration this year. Mental Wellness Division Manager Annette George was a guest on Bayfm’s Qalipu Today with Lenny Benoit. She says the Winter Village kicks off February 27th from 6-9 p.m. with fireside story telling by Elder Clifford Paul and it will include snacks. February 28th is a day for family and George says everyone from the community is invited. They will have moose stew with bannock, a tea station with hot chocolate, a hunting and trapping session with rabbit snare demonstrations, as well as fur and plant medicine displays. Other events include skills teachings, a toboggan and snow shoe sprint, log sawing contest, demonstrations on building an outdoor emergency kit and an ice fishing pond for the kids.
George says the Mental Wellness Division is focused on “creating spaces,” with one example being the Community Arts Program each month where people are invited to take part. She says it’s so important for mental wellness just to talk when we are often so isolated, and social media is becoming more prominent in our lives.
