Qalipu First Nation Chief Jenny Brake is looking forward to employment and economic opportunities for members in light of a partnership reached last week. The Qalipu, the Membertou First Nation and Horizon Naval Engineering now own the 140 year old St. John’s shipyard, known as Newdock. Chief Brake says the deal has been ten months in the making and she couldn’t be more proud of the announcement. Brake says the future is bright and she feels first nations are being considered more as viable economic partners. She says it’s an honour to be in membership with Membertou First Nations. Chief Brake says they bring traditional knowledge and access that others don’t have to the table.
