Police is a issued a public advisory and a description of a man allegedly carrying a rifle in the town.
RCMP thanks the public for tips in locating a man in Carbonear who was reported to be carrying a rifle. Police got the call shortly after 8:15 yesterday morning saying the man was seen leaving a car and running in the area of Valley Road with a cased rifle in hand. An urgent advisory asking residents to stay inside and lock their doors was issued via the Provincial Alert Ready system which included a description of the man. Cpl Jolene Garland says an empty rifle case was found but no gun. “An Extensive search was conducted in the area and an empty rifle case was located near the College of the North Atlantic.” Cpl Garland says RCMP officers from Harbour Grace, Bay Roberts and surrounding detachments, as well as Police Dogs Services and the Emergency Response Team, were deployed and a safety perimeter was established. “In a report where we feel we may possibly have someone running around with a firearm in hand we have to treat that as factual and act on it with the best information we have.” The man was located at a home on O’Driscoll’s Lane at approximately 10:00 a.m
