Cabinet had decided to grant payments of up to $48,000 to Ministers if they lost in the next election, or if they stepped down voluntarily and chose not to run again.
Some people are calling it a “Golden Handshake” after the progressive conservatives revealed recently that Cabinet had decided to grant payments of up to $48,000 to Ministers if they lost in the next election, or if they stepped down voluntarily and chose not to run again. That decision has since been revoked by Premier John Hogan. Corner Brook MHA Gerry Byrne announced last Friday he would not be seeking re-election this fall. He says payments were intended to provide a severance to all MHAs and MHAs decided that. Byrne says this is a very important political public policy issue and all MHAs should voice how they feel about it before the election. After 30 years in politics, Byrne says he feels on top of the game but it’s time for a rest.
