The Progressive Conservative Shadow Minister for Justice is calling on government’s commitment to the fines option program, first mentioned in 2017. Helen Conway Ottenheimer says this is after years of delays and excuses. She says “after almost a decade of being proposed, government appears no closer to allowing people with large fines the ability to perform community service to reduce the amount owed.” Conway Ottenheimer says “over the last year, the number of fines owed has increased to $51.7 million.” During budget estimates last week, the Department of Justice confirmed that the fines option program is still not operational. In 2019, it was part of the Throne speech.
