The leader of the Opposition is calling for an investigation either by the Auditor General or the RCMP in light of money spent on travel nurses. Tony Wakeham says a reporter at the Globe and Mail uncovered things like $1.6 million spent on meals for these nurses, who didn’t get the meals. He says government is showing a lack of leadership and accountability to the people of this province. Wakeham says a few days ago, the Health Minister questioned the need for an investigation. Now, the Minister is trying to get the Controller General who is answerable to a Minister to investigate themselves. Wakeham says the Auditor General is independent from the House of Assembly. He says privatization of healthcare and undermining nurses is not what Newfoundlanders and Labradorians expect or want.
