The Newfoundland and Labrador Laubach Literacy Council (NLLLC) proudly recognizes Maureen Kennedy's impressive 35-plus years of dedicated volunteer service. She has been named the first distinguished recipient of the NLLLC Literacy Legacy Award, a new honor established to recognize future volunteers who demonstrate an extraordinary and lasting commitment to literacy development across the province.
A resident of Massey Drive, Maureen Kennedy has been a notable advocate for literacy throughout Newfoundland and Labrador since the late 1980s. Her journey started at the most basic level, patiently helping adults learn to read and write as a volunteer tutor at "the kitchen table." Her dedication quickly earned her the Supervising Trainer-Literacy certification, the highest Laubach Trainer designation in Canada. In this key role, Maureen expanded her impact by training others to become trainers and tutors, ensuring that the NLLLC's essential one-on-one services reached individuals throughout the province.
"I am truly humbled," said Maureen Kennedy. "My work with the NLLLC has been a lifelong passion. What people don’t realize is that I get as much out of this as those I have helped."
