Cannabis was legalized in 2018 and there are now 59 licensed retailers throughout NL with another 5-6 expected to open in the new year.

The head of the NL Liquor Corporation is concerned about the dangers of illegal cannabis and amazed at the number of people who think it’s legal to buy from a dealer or even online. Bruce Keating says this comes from a recent public opinion survey and they found examples of mould, pesticides and bacteria in products.

He says the survey revealed that many consumers continue to purchase from illegal sources thinking it’s legal. One in ten (or 10%) of survey respondents believed that purchasing cannabis from a dealer was considered legal while 32%) believed that online mail order marijuana sites, also known as MOM sites, were legal.

The NLC has launched their “Know the Risks of Illegal Cannabis” campaign and Keating says being “entrusted with ensuring safe and responsible access to cannabis, they want consumers to understand the real risks that come with illegal products.”
