NL Young Farmers saw its membership nearly double over the past year from 91 to 175 members. They are a group of 18-40 year olds who are either interested in farming, new farmers, and established farmers. Membership is free and provides access to resources, workshops, training, and networking opportunities.
Lauralee Ledrew of Upper Humber Settlement, was named a Champion for a Greener Future by the Multi- Materials Stewardship Board. She says this group is a wonderful organization full of opportunities for young farmers to become recognized in their area. They have a lot of mentorship programs; they have educational opportunities. So, they really connect young farmers with industry specialists.” videos and webinars, connections with NLFA for trainee chances. Ledrew says last year, there were people from all over the province at the NL Young Farmers symposium in Deer Lake, and she expects more at this year’s event.
With support from the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), NL Young Farmers also covered 75 per cent of the cost for various members to attend out-of-province agriculture conferences.
