Lambe says teachers here are hopeful that the newly provincial government is carefully watching the situation unfolding in Alberta and does not make the same mistake as it prepares to bargain with its public sector unions, including teachers province.
Teachers in this province are throwing their support behind educators in Alberta as they are being forced back to work this week after being on strike since October 2nd. NLTA President Dale Lambe says “when teachers stand up for better learning and teaching conditions, they are standing up for every child in their classroom,” and the support that students need to succeed. He says here in Newfoundland and Labrador, our teachers are experiencing similar pressures, growing class sizes, increasing student needs, violence in the classroom and not enough resources to address them.
Lambe says teachers here are hopeful that the newly provincial government is carefully watching the situation unfolding in Alberta and does not make the same mistake as it prepares to bargain with its public sector unions, including teachers province. He says back-to-work legislation undermines the right to a fair collective bargaining process. When any government uses legislation to end a strike, they silence the voices of workers instead of addressing the issues that brought them to the table.
The NLTA is encouraging people to wear red in support of teachers in Alberta.
