he City of Corner Brook does not currently have a policy that requires participants of on-ice activities at the Corner Brook Civic Centre to wear helmets while they are on the ice.

It’s not quite time for ice activities at the Corner Brook Civic Centre but at this week’s public meeting, council adopted a policy that requires participants to wear helmets while on the ice. Councillor Pamela Gill says the city does not currently have a policy that requires participants of on-ice activities at the Corner Brook Civic Centre to wear helmets while they are on the ice. The risk of a slip and fall is significantly increased while engaging in on-ice activities. Wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of injury.

Councillor Bill Griffin asked who will be enforcing the new policy.  Director of Engineering Donny Burden says that will be up to what’s called “a cruiser”, hired to keep an eye on skaters. There will be exemptions in the policy for professional athletes and a waiver for them to sign.
