Some of the more prominent birds in this area include the black capped chickadees, morning doves, blue jays but it’s possible to find upwards of 160 species of birds in NL during the winter months.

It’s that time of year when birds are trying to navigate ahead of our tough winter climate. The Nature Conservancy of Canada is shining the light on some of the issues birds have been facing. Andrew Holland says their main issues are safe habitat and food. He says they’ve hosted recent webinars to give bird enthusiasts some ideas on how to support “our feathered friends.”

As part of the NCC’s “NatureTalks”, called “Feathers in the Frost,” these webinars were open to anyone interested in staying connected with nature and supporting the birds that brighten up our winter landscape. Holland says bird watching can be very peaceful, something he enjoys from cedar trees in his backyard. Nature and shelter are important but Holland says ethical bird photography is vital and there is a certain way to take pictures of birds.
