The executive director of the Corner Brook Status of Women Council, Paula Sheppard, says more women are impacted by poverty.

The National Advisory Council on Poverty held their first in person visit in the Atlantic provinces recently at an event hosted by the Community Sector Council NL and online. NCAP representatives gave an update on their work and listened to what attendees are seeing and doing to fight poverty. The executive director of the Corner Brook Status of Women Council, Paula Sheppard, says more women are impacted by poverty. She says what we have in this province is Pay Transparency but we really need Pay Equity legislation, equal pay for equal work. Sheppard says with poverty also comes an increase in violence and there is no strategy or task force to address gender based violence. The National Council on Poverty will write a report by the end of June, which will be presented to the federal government in September.
