Lost bikers safely located by St. Anthony RCMP
Two bikers were found safely by St Anthony RCMP on Tuesday evening, after they became lost in a wooded area off the Fortune Trail on the Northern Peninsula.
On August 13, around 6:40 p.m., two e-bike riders called 9-1-1, reporting that they were lost on the Fortune Trail and requesting assistance. St. Anthony RCMP responded, with support from the St. Anthony and St. Lunaire-Griquet fire departments. Long Range Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) were also deployed to the scene.
GPS coordinates indicated that the bikers were close to the dock in the abandoned community of Fortune. An RCMP officer travelled by boat to location with the St. Lunaire-Griquet Fire Department to the abandoned community of Fortune, and the two individuals were located safely a short distance away.
The bikers were escorted by boat to St. Lunaire-Griquet. They were evaluated by emergency medical services personnel, and were tired but unharmed.
RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador thanks responders from the St. Anthony and St. Lunaire-Griquet for their support in successfully locating the missing pair, and Long Range GSAR for responding to the call for assistance.
A reminder: before you head out on the trails, make sure you are safe and prepared. This includes:
• Checking the weather, weather warnings and trail conditions before you go, and make note of when sunset is.
• Hiking with a friend or group, and always tell someone where you are going, when you plan to get back and what your planned route is.
• Researching your route before leaving and ensure you stick to the trails. Know your limits and choose a hike that matches your experience and abilities.
• Packing emergency supplies, like a first aid kit, flashlight and whistle, and making sure you have adequate food and water.
• Keeping in mind that not all trails will have consistent cellular reception, in the event that you need to call for help. Consider packing an emergency communication device.
• If you do get lost and call for help, do not move from your current location. This will help so rescuers locate you.
