Jenny Brake has been elected Chief of Qalipu First Nation

Polls for the Qalipu First Nation band council election closed Friday night.

The Qalipu First Nation band council election came to a close at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and brought with it some new faces.

Following a nearly year-long stint as Acting Chief of the Qalipu First Nation, Jenny Brake will keep that role as Chief elect. Other contenders for the position were Byron Alexander and Laura T. White.

Taking on the role of Western Vice Chief is Charles White, while Colleen Paul was elected as Central Vice Chief. Acclaimed ward councillors include Terri Greene (Benoit's Cove), Ernest Green (Corner Brook), Ivan White Sr. (Flat Bay), Calvin Francis (Gander Bay), and Miranda Osmond (Stephenville). Elected councillors are Shianne Squires (Exploits), Frank Skeard (Glenwood), and Lory Benoit-Jesso (Port-au-Port).

A by-election date for the St. George's ward councillor role will be determined at a later date since there were no nominations.

Voting numbers have yet to be released by the band.
