Intimate Partner Violence has been on the increase since the Covid Pandemic and incidents make up 30 percent of violent offences reported to police. That’s according to Heather Davis, who is the Executive Director of Willow House in Corner Brook. From 2019-2023, the number of intimate partner violence occurrences went up from 1367 to 3394, representing an overall increase of about 150 percent. In 2021, there were 891 incidents where a person faced one or more related charges charges which went to over 1000 in 2023, an increase of 19 percent. Davis says many of the women who come to the transition house do not report this to police. While many people wonder why women stay Davis says sometimes it’s hard to recognize abuse from someone you love and it takes a while to come to terms with it. Davis says abusive relationships often bring a cycle of violence.
