She says storytelling is key to history and doing that through performing arts is a perfect fit.
It was founded in March and Indigenous Performing Arts NL is busy creating support to present indigenous stories. Leah Dawn Helena is the group’s Curator and says they are building the organization now with new board members and creating roots with communities. She says storytelling is key to history and doing that through performing arts is a perfect fit. Helena says performing is a part of who we are as human beings and is found in every culture. She says finding these indigenous stories are best done being within the community. Helena says some of the stories are hard to hear with the ugliness of the past and performing arts provide a safe place to do so. She says the next step is community capacity building and making connections, like workshops and new playwrights.
