Hughes Brook is under a State of Emergency due to the “extremely low water levels in the dam and lack of rain. This means residents are being ordered to conserve water. Mayor Debbie White says there will be daily shutoffs in the north shore Bay of Islands community from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and again from 9 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. The water level is so low she says it’s like the spout in a bathtub pouring into a water supply to service 60 households. White says last week during shutoffs, the level rose about 16 inches in the 4-5 day period. The fire department is shared with Irishtown-Summerside and she says there’s not enough water to fill a fire truck. In 2022, Hughes Brook was faced with a similar situation and White says they had to bring in water from Corner Brook which cost the tiny community $7000.. Se says they will apply for funding to do this again, but that may not be enough to keep a steady supply.
Meanwhile, residents who do not conserve water could face a fine and should only be using water for drinking, cooking or hygiene. White says it takes every resident doing their part to make this work.
