Sherry Chippitt of the NL Housing and Homelessness Network says that crisis is happening here with people facing eviction or even sleeping in cars.
Homelessness is an issue in Corner Brook and communities across the country with shelter use on the rise since 2020. About 25 percent of those people are experiencing chronic homelessness. On the last edition of Bayfm’s “The Plain Truth,” the guest was Sherry Chippitt of the NL Housing and Homelessness Network. She says that crisis is happening here with people facing eviction or even sleeping in cars. Chippitt says some people are facing eviction for no just cause and they work to help prevent it from happening. Affordable housing is based on a renter’s gross income with rentals including utilities costing 30 percent of that amount but Chippitt says that’s not happening here with people spending over 57 percent on housing expenses alone. She says there needs to be more housing made available to meet the demand, and it has to be affordable and accessible
