Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Minister Chris Tibbs says “given the potential risk to aquaculture, fishing and mining sectors and the viability of the communities who rely on them, the Provincial Government is unable to proceed.”

The provincial government has “terminated” feasibility on a memorandum of understanding for a National Marine Conservation on the south coast and the redesignation of Sandbanks Provincial Park in Burgeo as a National Park. Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Minister Chris Tibbs says “government is committed to strengthening conservation efforts and protecting our province’s environment. However, given the potential risk to aquaculture, fishing and mining sectors and the viability of the communities who rely on them, the Provincial Government is unable to proceed.” The Minister stresses that protecting the environment while fostering economic development requires careful balance. Government is committed to safeguarding natural ecosystems while supporting sustainable industry, trade and community growth. Meanwhile, those who signed on the MOU have been notified, including the Government of Canada (Parks Canada), Miawpukek ( mee-ah-puck-ehk) First Nation, Qalipu First Nation and the Town of Burgeo.
