The Chief at the St. George’s Fire Department says they had to fight two fires last night that she believes were intentionally set. This while a fire ban is in place across the province amid wildfires burning on the east coast. Fire Chief Nikkia O’Brien says thanks to the quick actions of our firefighters, the situation was brought under control — but it’s a stark reminder of just how serious our current fire ban is. O’Brien says with the hot, dry conditions, it only takes a spark for a fire to spread quickly and the west coast doesn’t have the resources to fight wildfires. Setting fires during a ban is not only dangerous but also against the law. O’Brien says while it isn’t official yet, this was deliberate and set with brush and an old step close to a structure.
