Environment and Climate Change Minister Dr. Scott Reid is encouraging people in this province to do one small act to protect the environment by reducing plastic waste.  June 5th was World Environment Day and the theme was, “ Beat Plastic Pollution.” Reid dropped in to Bayfm yesterday for a chat with Mike Payne. He has been the Environment Minister for about 6 weeks now and says there are a lot of possibilities and challenges. Reid recently met with the Multi Materials Stewardship Board in Corner Brook. He says NL covers such a large geographical area and this presents a challenge for waste management. Reid is the MHA For St. George’s-Humber and says over the past ten years, he has taken part in community cleanups. Each year, approximately 10 per cent of the 400 million tonnes of plastic produced worldwide is recycled, with an estimated 11 million tonnes deposited in lakes, rivers and seas.
